Cast Away 2

Catch and Release was inspired by the ideas of casual relationships/flings.
The images evironment take place at a lake. Water is a sense of purity and a lake is one of those rare bodies of water that is placid and just filthy. The images are ment to work together and as seperates. Together each piece has an equal (ying and a yang) but each character plays on the idea of isolation so with space and placement the meaning changes.

I branded a logo and business card for Fountain Side Arts a small up and coming gallery in Fountain Hills Arizona. Learning how to educate and encourage clients to be more cautious and intentional with their choices is always interesting.

I think teaching in a way always make me a better designer because you have to explain why you choose is successful. Expressing your thoughts out loud always helps me understand my decisions better. Special thanks to Taryn Hiroshima. Thanks for all of your lovely advice.

I was commissioned to create a piece as a valentine's day gift. My client's husband Christopher Flemming works for FENDER as a guitar craftsman. He created the Tele®/Strat® Hybrid Custom Shop Guitar. I drew the family playing together on stage. With a little research on Fender and help from the great Nathan Ota here is the end result.

Blessed Be Accessories:

This was a book that I made inspired by clubbers, hipsters and random people that I meet at parties.

Introduction:

"Everyone has secrets

help to conceal the cat in the bag

at least for a while.

In a nutshell the book is about different stereotypes and how accessories make you "appear" to be something your not. Example: one girl is covered in tattoos but her coat makes her appear to be quite the classic beauty. etc. you get the idea.

Feist Music Poster

Huge Feist fan. I got this book called "Master Poster Design" There are small companies of teams who freelance music posters as a living. People like Hammer Press, Aesthetic Apparatus, Patent Pending Design, and Heads of States are just some of my favorite from the book. I wanted to do a promotional art poster for her concert in Toronto.

I'm looking forwards to exploring more silkscreening process this coming semester.

For J.T.'s Illustrative book class I made a children's book about two best friends hanging out over the time span of one day. I posted some of my favorite spreads but they lack the text layout.

The merchandise I made to accompany the book was two best friend necklaces. They fit inside each other and also some extra necklaces for fun.

Typography 3: Wave Book

Type III

We were given a project to design a book given a single word. My word was WAVE and Icreated a 107 page book with articles and stories related to major world known genocide events. My book depicts the feeling of waves movements.

Manifesto: Destruction, power, repetition and purification are the actions but the results are life changing. fascinated with the history I wanted to explore a topic that related the physical characteristics produced by physical water waves. Waves like genocide are destructive, cleansing, repetitive and powerful. Theses are the aspects of wave. They surround the bodies of land in out small planet and affect us all no matter your location. The politics of human/civil rights of different societies is challenged by the idea of ethnic cleansing. I wanted to discuss the waves of genocide through the story-telling of how we are all affected by the endless wave of limited thinking.

For thesis my group did a project on design using sustainability. Erica, Zach and I collaborated on these little sustainable books/keepsakes for our class. On recycled paper, hand set type with soy ink here is our final product.

"Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth- A running faucet wastes over 6 liters per minuet."

Integrated Learning San Joaquin Valley Laton, California.

EXPERIENCE:

Romina and I signed up for the San Joaquin Valley IL class. This class was amazing thanks to Marela Donahue (Art Historian), Sammy Flores Pena (Anthropologist) and all of the students (especially the seniors because we killed it.)
The class was an introduction to fieldwork. One of the graduate students suggested this program to our teachers at Otis because she was born and raised in Laton. Chelo's goal was to return the visual arts back into her community.
We went the San Joaquin Valley because it is one of the major "bread baskets" in California. Being one of the main suppliers of produce and dairy we wanted to learn the community's struggles and achievements. We discovered that the farmers are greatly suffering because they are not getting enough recognition for the work that they do.

PROBLEM:

Farmers are being under paid and unappreciated. With the no child left behind act there is a huge emphasis on teaching main courses like math and reading. Although, school administrators do not make the correlation between art and science. That everything is intertwined. Most importantly the benefits that art has a on a community. Their school systems are not receiving enough funding for extra curricular activities. Therefore programs like art, drama, music etc is being cut.

OUTCOME:

Marlena said that if nothing else was to be accomplished that if we could see a change of awareness and thinking within ourselves that would be a well worth trip.
As seniors we interviewed the community trying to learn their history and emphasis how important Laton was even though many of them didn't think so. It was wonderful actually connecting with the people face to face. Unfortunately we did not get an idea of all of the social classes in Laton. We were mostly interviewing middle class/ working class citizens. We were told that if we went into the working fields we would endanger the people's jobs or worse be shot... righttt so at the end we did get a few people who worked in the fields interviews. Marlena and Sammy had us all work in groups to put together to create a book about the histories and lives of the people in Laton. We were put in four groups of four to three. Each group created a proposals of what some families that represented stories essential to Laton culture. It was nice to see the different visual interpretations of how we thought the pages should look like.

ROUTINE:

Each day was intense. We woke up around 7:00am interview sessions, then lecture, and discussion about interviews and lecture with Sammy and Marlena, reflections at an abandoned Protestant church with the graduate students and juniors, more lecture from Laton administrators, dinner, homework to at least 1:00am.

CLOSING REMARK:

This was an amazing opportunity and I'm glad I was able to be apart of it.

THE WORK:

These were just some of the examples of the pages we did for our final project. Our team consisted of a Beth(fine artist), Taryn (graphic designer) and Romina and I (Illustrators) We all contributed a little bit of everything. Beth really helped with the theory,Romina, Taryn and I did a lot of the designing and the image work. Our idea was to make the pages look like a sketch book.1

At the Lions club an hour away from setting up the final show. Thanks to Daniel we were able to print out all of our work.

Melon Head

I really like this small painting I did over Summer of Art. My students went grocery shopping and bought a watermelon. I said they were all melon heads for buying such a large one and not eating even half of it. By the way they named the melon Jackie. Jackie went to waste. I guess he will live on in the painting.

INTERNSHIPS:

This Summer has been really crazy working at one time four jobs. At one point I was working for gallery, a marketing firm, school and corporate.

GUESS?:

it was a good opportunity to see how fast pace things move and what exactly type of work they do. It was interesting because all of the guidelines are figured out for you. How big this logo is allowed to look on mailers versus a catalogue or what color palette you can use of GbyGUESS line versus the Marciano by GUESS. Since GUESS is an international corporation you had to be careful with using the guidelines versus GUESS China to GUESS Paris etc. It was nice working in the advertisement department. I worked for the graphic department and modeling area. I was scheduling shoots, picking models, preparing the clothes etc. In the graphic dept I got to make mailers, I worked on an ad the NY Times, giftcards, loyalty cards and other small projects. As helpful as the job was it was pretty intense. No one really talked to each other. It was all business.

Here is one of the designs I summit ed to be turned into a gift card. There is a G charm that is diacutted in the white circle area.

This was one of the catalogues I got to go on the print check for. Print checks are the best.

PROMTIONS GROUP WEST:

A marketing firm in Venice that helps to promote clients receive more awareness about their product. We do all of their identity (business cards, logos, websites, etc.) I collaborated with Sean on a project for Tarah Smith bags. It was fun working at the marketing firm because I strictly worked as a commercial illustrator. I did a lot of sketching and painting. On the Tarah Smith bag we talked about how she wanted to change her image. Her old image was extremely corporate and so what we wanted to do was make her image more bohemian and natural. Sean designed a lot of the insides and I painted a lot of images for her website, look book, pamphlets, website. There were other projects but this was my favorite one. Special thanks to In and Out. I stole all their salt to use on the watercolor.

This is a painting of my dad and his favorite food in the entire world. Grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of tomato soup. I wanted to emphasize that my dad is not asian but he does have those crazy eyebrows.

FROSHO:

Over the last few weeks I have been having a lot of fun sketching on post it notes. It is a really nice size to just make lines and small images. The post it notes inspired me to create a small series of paintings entitled "frosho".

The paintings are based of types of people who would haveAfros. I thought about using icon people such as Richard Simmons but it just seemed to corny. The painting of the boy with the lady bug is based off of my dad. During break I found a picture of my dad from the 70s. He was a proud white man with an Afro with bell bottoms and aVolkswagen beetle covered in ladybugs.

I did this painting a couple of weeks ago. I painted out of frustration because I am getting a little stressed out with the way my work has been evolving. I am trying to do work with a more limited and less saturated color pallet.

PHOTOSHOP:

Photoshop is such a great tool to edit your work, so use it to your advantage. I learned a lot in this painting. Even though I was using the original photo and my sketch to outline the piece, doing the forgery was pretty difficult. I mostly experiemented with contrast, curves, levels, color balance, masks and textures.

MIDDLE OF COMPLETION:

In the fourth step my I had to change the nose because I describing the nose as having a flat plane. So I fixed it in the fifth step making it appear more rounded out. I had to also fix the eyes because I made the right eye appear more round than it was so I elongated the lid. The left eye was to low so I raised its placement.

STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY:

We also discussed the importance of having a collection of stock textures to add to your paintings. Photoshop is such a great tool to edit your work, so use it to your advantage. Dialogue Painting

DIALOGUE:

In this painting I had to find a letter and illustrate it. I found this priceless letter my brother wrote my dad when he was about 7 years old. He's begging my dad to adopt another baby from Korea. In the initial sketch I literally had a baby sitting on the ice cream. That was such a problem because it implied cannibalism ha.ha.ha. Anyhow, I thought if I change the baby to a sketch then I could create a scene with crayons and maybe imply school. Yeah I was on to something. I am going to fix this painting too. I'm excited to see what my brother has to say when he see the painting.

This was one of the most challenging paintings I have ever completed. There is no black boarder around the original painting. I think this painting took such a long time for a couple of reasons. Conceptualizing took forever. I had eight pages of thumbnails front to back alone. All of the thumbnails made it hard to commit to an idea. Every time I start a painting it is such a scary feeling because I am reteaching myself how to paint. I get really nervous because I don't want to ruin my painting. Eventually I have to get it done. The skin was giving me so much trouble. I still need to brighten it up a bit but I have a better understanding of what colors (especially yellow/color of light) that brighten the painting without making the skin look chalky or neon. My goal over break is to do a small skin study in acrylic every day. I am going to try to incorporate more graphics in my painting. I really like the look of combining rendered areas with simplified graphics.

Heaven and Hell

H,E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICK:

Our teachers for this project divided the class into two groups. One group would be illustrating their idea of hell and the other would illustrate their idea of heaven. I was given hell. I wanted to depict my idea of HELL which is to loose one's memory as hell.

This is my process that I usually go through when I create a painting. There is a week of thumb nailing and brainstorming. Then once I pick the idea a bunch of comps are done to pick which composition works the best, then the final idea with placement, final drawing (rendered) and then painting process. I was told at my last review I should experiment with a different color palette and increase my contrast in values. I will be fixing this painting over break.

Limmerick Painting

IMAGE:
I wanted to create a piece that looked the same from upside down to right side up. I think it works but more as if the viewer were looking down at the painting. The fins on the painting from the smoke are a bit uncomfortable because I did not emphasize it enough. So I fixed it Photo shop.

Oils

These paintings are from Sophomore year. It was the first time someone actually taught me how to use oils properly. The top three paintings are forgeries of Van Gogh and Da Vinci.
Last painting is of Evan. He has a painting looking down at me with a rolling pin. Hopefully, I can find a photo of his painting. Painting on Canvas than canvas board is was easier. On canvas it's much easier to push the paint around where as the board the paint gets stuck with in the groves. Next semester I am really looking forward to painting with oils again in Bob Dob's class. I want to paint on wood boards though.

Digital Painting

I took my first digital painting class this year. I find digital painting to be more of a tool that a profession. Also digital painters are usually concept artists. I don't find my subject matter to be as scifi or twisted as concept art is. I love Cecil Kim he is the best teacher ever. He actually just did some concept art for a new Pixar movie. The new God of War game is going to be amazing and that is all I am going to say! The bottom sketch was based off a slogan including the statement "_ yourself." My statement was "treat yourself. " I may show the painting when I add some final touches. Right now the background lighting looks pretty pitiful.

POSTCARDS:
This was a project from Sophomore year. Our project was to create postcards that reflected our Otis experience. A lot of people we taking a negative perspective on the project. Meaning that their Otis experience left included being sleep deprived, smoking, etc. I wanted to display how Otis is a positive place of growth and greater thinking. Coming from Arizona where the art level is considered a joke compared to L.A. I wanted to express my gratitude to the school.

I used a variety of different materials in these postcards. I used lots of modge podge and the laser cutter.

SOPHOMORE YEAR PHOTOGRAPHY:

I really love the beauty in traditional photography. I must admit that my love for process make me love developing the photos more than actually taking the photos. The majority of these photos are 8.5 inx11in. Although, it was really fun using the micron lens to print out 3x5.The nude photos are from a photo shoot in the lighting studio.
